Define the gap narrowly
“Needs more security training” is too broad to guide a useful intervention. “Needs to verify a payment change through an independent channel” is specific enough to teach and reassess.
Start from the evidence and check alternative explanations. A confusing process, inaccessible reporting route or unclear authority may require operational changes as well as learning.
Choose an intervention someone can use
A short decision exercise, role-specific example or guided practice can focus on the behavior. The right format depends on the task, audience and available time. A long course is not automatically more useful than a concise intervention.
Language and context matter. Translation should preserve the decision and the realistic cues, not merely replace words. Confirm supported languages, accessibility and delivery formats with the provider.
Use assessment to reveal reasoning
A useful question distinguishes between actions that appear reassuring and actions that actually address the risk. Replying to a suspicious payment request may feel like verification; contacting a supplier through a known channel tests a different relationship.
Explain why an answer is useful. Treat a wrong response as evidence of what needs clarification, not as a reason to shame the learner.
Reassess the behavior, not the memory of the lesson
After the intervention, use a new situation that tests the same decision. Repeating the original message may measure recognition of a template rather than transfer of learning.
Keep the conditions sufficiently comparable to interpret a change. Record who received the intervention, who encountered the reassessment and what remained unmeasured.
Keep people responsible for the learning journey
AI can assist with identifying relevant content or explaining patterns, but recommendations still need context. A person should review the purpose, suitability and impact of an intervention.
Automatic assignment is a product capability that needs verification. Regardless of the tool, the program should be able to explain why a learner received a particular activity and what improvement it intends to support.
